Exercise to decrease stress, increase energy and improve your complexion

I don’t know about you, but I really start to feel it if I don’t exercise for a few weeks. I become more lazy and sleep in that little bit longer, I become brilliant at conjuring up reasons why I deserve sleep-ins, my mood drops, I lack inspiration and no longer have that spring in my step or vibrant energy that I love so much. It scares the pants off me!

And I know all too well how challenging it can be to find the motivation to exercise sometimes. But one thing I have found to be true … when I move my body every day, I feel healthier and happier. It’s as simple as that.

There is so much research out there stating that regular exercise is one of the best physical stress-reduction techniques, that it relaxes tense muscles, helps you to sleep, improves blood flow to the brain, reduces your risk to certain diseases and releases chemicals called endorphins in to your blood stream giving you a feeling of happiness.

And then there’s the healthy glow that exercise brings out in your complexion. Most aerobic exercise has a cleansing effect on the skin by increasing circulation and the delivery of nutrients to skin cells, and as a result assisting the detoxification of potentially damaging toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis. The better your circulation, the better your body has the ability to remove toxins which will mean the healthier your skin will not only be, but also look.

Regular exercise also increases sweating, which in turn can unclog pores and help to reduce the number of breakouts that you experience. Great for those who suffer from acne.

Also, when you exercise your level of stress decreases, therefore your adrenal glands are producing less of the hormones that are part of acne flare-ups.

For those of you concerned about ageing, exercise provides your skin with the optimum conditions for making collagen (the support fibers that are responsible for skin strength and elasticity, and wrinkles with its degradation).

Movement really is the key to a healthy body, mind and soul.

All that aside, quite simply … our bodies love to move. They are designed to move!

Whether it’s walking, jogging, running, swimming, surfing, horse riding, rock climbing, martial arts, yoga, pilates, cycling, training at the gym, playing sport or anything else, if you would like to feel healthier and happier, please make the choice to move your body. Try it out for a month and see how it feels. 

If you’re struggling to think of something that you like to do, how about going for a walk around the block? Or a walk up to the local shops to pick up the groceries? Or a walk in your lunch break to search out the nearest park?

Personally, I love the vibrant feeling of having energy. I love to move my body. I love the sensation of feeling the muscles in my body. I love knowing that I can run up a mountain if I choose it.

On the flip side, I’ve had those months whereby I’ve been fabulously lazy. Doing absolute nothing but laying on my back with every excuse I could think of to avoid moving my body. Getting consumed with my work, glued to the computer screen for hours and hours, thinking that I didn’t have the time to exercise. Not my best choices. Why? Because the difference that I feel when I exercise is incredible. I’m a totally different person. More happy. More vibrant. More creative. More kind. And more of the me that I love to be.

By making a commitment to myself to move my body every day, even if it's simply a walk on the beach, this choice contributes to my present and future self, so that I don’t wake up one day wondering why I don’t have the stamina or strength to enjoy and experience this beautiful planet we live upon. Or wonder why I’m such a grumpy bum.

Sure the first 5 minutes may sometimes be a struggle, but once in the groove, the next half-hour is when all the joy emerges.

Side note

Walking is not the lazy person’s version of running. It is an excellent low-impact workout with head-to-toe health benefits on both a physical and emotional level. Walking helps to keep you fit. Walking is also extremely beneficial for

  • the health of your heart
  • improves circulation
  • improves breathing
  • combats depression
  • improves the immune system
  • helps prevent osteoporosis
  • helps prevent and control diabetes
  • helps control weight


For the next 30-days, do something that you personally love to to that gets your body moving every single day. Yes, every single day. Even if it’s a 20 minute walk at sunset to let go of the day; or a 15 minute walk around the block in your lunch break; or get up half an hour earlier. Try it out for a month and see the difference in how you feel.
